About Us

Who We Are

Medical Defence Shield (MDS) provides a unique service to support healthcare professionals by offering both clinical defence and employment support under a single membership plan.

We are an autonomous not-for-profit organisation established in 2010, evolving from our roots within BAPIO (British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin).
MDS is now recognised as one of the four main defence organisations providing services to the medical fraternity in the United Kingdom.

Our experts deal with a wide range of problems faced by our members, including contract and pay queries, grievances, clinical negligence, coroner’s inquests, clinical complaints, disciplinary procedures, and GMC investigations.

Our legal team works to the standards set and approved by the SRA (Solicitors Regulatory Authority).

What makes us unique

Traditionally, professional clinical defence and employment matters have been handled by separate medical defence organisations (MDOs) and their representatives. However, it is often impossible to separate these in many instances requiring professional support. A clinical incident could lead to not only an internal investigation involving MHPS but also lead to a GMC referral, a malpractice claim, and even interest from the Police.

MDS recognised the complex nature of these issues and decided to provide a better, more comprehensive product. MDS is the only organisation that can deal with employment, regulatory, and malpractice claims related to NHS employment all by itself.

MDS has an in-house team of expert solicitors, medicolegal and employment advisors which means that our advisors can have unbiased and direct access to expert legal advice. This allows us to focus on our member’s needs holistically and provide personalised professional support, without compromise.

International medical graduates

A significant proportion of the UK medical workforce are international medical graduates (IMGs). Although highly qualified, IMGs may struggle with the challenges of adapting to a different healthcare system and unfamiliar training requirements.

There are additional challenges with understanding the medicolegal, GMC/regulatory framework, career progression, and working practices within the NHS. Communication issues and differing cultural contexts present a further challenge and may significantly impact performance and job expectations.

MDS has a wealth of experience working with overseas or international healthcare professionals due to our roots in BAPIO and our diversely skilled team. This makes us well-placed to understand and anticipate these challenges, especially during the transition period for IMG’s starting work in the UK.

Because of this MDS has consistently ensured personalised advice, support, guidance, and mentoring for our members with all aspects of employment, medicolegal, and clinical matters.
